Preparing

North Carolina requires the following hunting documents to hunt swan or duck:

  • NC Hunting License
  • HIP Certification
  • Signed NC Duck Stamp
  • Tundra Swan Permit (Hunters under 16 require only the Tundra Swan Permit)

You can apply for one of the 4,895 tundra swan permits between July 1st and October 1st.

  • Click ONLINE to enter the NC ALVIN network.
  • On the Customer Search pages, SEARCH for your existing customer record or ADD CUSTOMER.
  • Confirm your CUSTOMER INFO and email address.
  • And Renew, Replace add New License Holder Information Items.
  • On the License & Permit Info page, select your desired type of license.
  • For Swan, select Permit Hunt Opportunities and locate item 9000, species 'Tundra Swan' and Add to Cart. Here you must select a hunt or start your own.
  • Click Continue Shopping, and select the Privileges Only to add the federal duck stamp to your shopping cart.

Needed for the hunt:

  • Hunting documents and shotgun plugs (checked before hunt begins)
  • Camouflage facemask, jacket or fleece
  • Gloves, chest waders, rain suit
  • Flashlight, plenty of ammmunition (3'-3 1/2')
  • Cooler for transport of bird
  • Snacks and/or drinks

After the hunt:

  • Each hunter will receive a NC Wildfile Tundra Swan Servey by mail.
  • Return the Tundra Swan Survey by April 1st to remain eligible for the next season's hunt.
