Preparing
North Carolina requires the following hunting documents to hunt swan or duck:
- NC Hunting License
- HIP Certification
- Signed NC Duck Stamp
- Tundra Swan Permit (Hunters under 16 require only the Tundra Swan Permit)
You can apply for one of the limited number of tundra swan permits between July 1st and September 1st.

Needed for the hunt:
- Hunting documents and shotgun plugs (checked before hunt begins)
- Camouflage facemask, jacket or fleece
- Gloves, chest waders, rain suit
- Flashlight, plenty of ammmunition (3'-3 1/2')
- Cooler for transport of bird
- Snacks and/or drinks
After the hunt:
- Each hunter will receive a NC Wildfile Tundra Swan Servey by mail.
- Return the Tundra Swan Survey by April 1st to remain eligible for the next season's hunt.
